A Path to More Efficient Performance Management
Performance appraisal schemes frequently suffer from bad reputations. On the other hand, performance management places a greater emphasis on performance planning and ongoing reviews. It provides greater benefits, including a clear communication about expectations, an objective base for reviewing performance, and an opportunity for collaboration that can lead to enhanced employee commitment.
The five-part Reinventing Appraisals video series is designed to teach managers, team leaders and employees how to implement performance management principles to achieve open communication and continuous development within your organisation. It explains the concept of performance management and provides step-by-step guidance on how to plan and review employee performance.
Each video program can be used for an effective meeting opener, or you may use all four to generate discussion and brainstorm your way into an outpouring of great ideas about coaching and mentoring.
Reinventing Appraisals includes five videos and comes with a detailed facilitator's guide (45 pages) full of activities, exercises and handouts that can be photocopied.
Video 1: The Performance Management Cycle

Video 3: Determining Key Result Areas
The second step in the performance planning process is to identify
the major components of the job, called key result areas. This video provides step-by-step procedures for managers and employees to
collaborate and develop key result areas that address both the activities to be completed and the results to be achieved. This means the job holder will be clear about what he/she is aiming to achieve, as well as why he/she is expected to achieve it.
How-to training points:
Break a particular job down into specific components or areas
Separate "what" the employee does from "why" they do it
Formulate a meaningful purpose or reason for the job's existence

and circumstances change

specific performance standards for each key result area. Viewers learn how to identify standards in a collaborative way that increases
commitment. Plus they'll discover easy ways to write quantitative and qualitative performance standards. The advantage of having
specific performance standards is that the manager and employee have a fair and objective basis to review performance later.
How-to training points:
Identify and set performance standards for a job's key results
Focus performance standards on results, not just tasks or activities
Develop quantitative and qualitative performance standards
Increase employee commitment by developing performance
standards collaboratively
