IDEAS AND TRAINING
"The average workplace murderer is likely to be unmarried, male and on the job at least 4 years. He has a grudge and knows exactly whom he wants to kill. Larry Hansel, for example, carried a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot co-workers in San Diego. He says he would do it again."
-- The Mind of Killer (article in USA Today - July 15, 2004
Conflict Resolution and Workplace Violence Prevention Training Videos
You know them. You work with them. They could be waiting for you. Violence starts with conflict. Conflict can be both positive and negative AND it should be addressed . . . before conflict escalates into violence.
According to statistics (2001 - Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries), most workplace killers (8 out of 10) die at the scene of the murder, are sentenced to death or serve a lifetime sentence in prison. Sometimes the killers die by their own hand, sometimes there is police intervention.
Our Conflict Resolution videos, conflict management videos, and workplace violence videos can settle disputes and help workplace violence prevention training.

Confict: The Rules of Engagement (cc)
How often have you heard someone say, "I'd like to get rid of conflict in my life?"
According to management consultant, author, and dynamic lecturer, Dr. Pat Heim, the day we're rid of conflict is the day we die. Conflict, like death and taxes, is something we can bank on throughout our lives. "But one of the great ironies about conflict," says Dr. Heim, "is that conflict is a central component for developing team cohesion in the workplace."
The art of conflict management on the job and in all interpersonal relationships is the subject of Conflict: The Rules of Engagement. Dr. Heim takes viewers through proven strategies which neutralize some conflicts straight out, or simplify complex conflicts into manageable ones. The end result is a more productive and respectful organization.
Joining THE POWER DEAD-EVEN RULE AND OTHER GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE, and INVISIBLE RULES: MEN, WOMEN & TEAMS, CONFLICT: THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT is the third program in the best-selling Pat Heim library from corVision Media.

It is estimated that by 2005, one billion people—a sixth of the world’s population—will use the Internet: with such widespread access, how vulnerable to online sabotage are banks, government agencies, nuclear plants, utilities, and hospitals? This program examines the Internet’s exponential growth and evaluates risks posed by groups and individuals bent on crime or terrorism. Experts from the FBI, the Pentagon, and private companies, and even a self-confessed hacker comment on the danger of online fraud and "denial of service" attacks as well as on anti-hacking and biometric identification as ways of protecting the World Wide Web—and perhaps the world itself. When the next terrorist attack occurs, will it be by air strike or keystroke? This program reveals the vulnerability of the Internet backbone to paralyzing hack attacks and measures being taken to close some of the many holes in the Net. After discussing the open nature of online communications and how attacks via landline are conducted, security consultants demonstrate the ease with which cyberterrorists can breach wireless networks by "war driving." Software and insurance companies as well as law enforcement agencies are cited as crucial components in what must become an all-out coordinated anti-terror effort—while there is still time. Facing Anger (cc)
How often have you heard someone say, "I'd like to get rid of conflict in my life?"
FACING ANGER introduces five employees of the same organization who represent some of the classic examples of anger experienced in the workplace.
Andy, a supervisor, is “The Bully”, someone who needs to keep control of everything. His type likes to lash out at safe targets who can’t retaliate.
Bonnie is a “Blamer”, always looking for something or someone to get mad about.
Carl is “The Chronic”, a moody type who is never satisfied with anything and is angry all the time.
Dan is “The Short Fuse”, living proof that it's easier to get mad than it is to think first.
Edie is “The Camouflager” disguising her anger with Passive-Aggressive behavior, usually with sarcastic remarks or feigning ignorance and lack of ability.
This collection of employees, along with others, is discovered at a Workshop being conducted on the premises by Fran, a professional therapist. After introducing her audience to the subject, (hitting very close to home with our five main characters) Fran takes her audience, (and the viewer) through several approaches that can be practiced for managing anger.
Told in their own words, in the form of “Anger Logs”, the five employees are seen implementing the techniques as they use several successful approaches to dealing with their anger.

The video
Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) receives a letter from an ex-convict that he had wounded and sent to prison . . . now he's coming to town to "set things straight" with Andy. Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) wants to provide protection and be prepared. Andy wants to wait and see what develops. The visitor shows up in town with a limp . . . and a shotgun.
This ten minute black & white production from the 1960s is amusing and presents many questions for us to consider in today's world of increased hostility and violence.

Murder 9 to 5: Violence in the Workplace
This video makes it perfectly clear that violence in the workplace not just something that happens somewhere else. And it usually gives plenty of warning. Employees and management should be able to recognize the signs. Something can and must be done.
Each year almost one million violent crimes are committed in the workplace. Some of them are fatal; many could be prevented. In investigative profiles of several infamous incidents, this program combines chilling footage with interviews of assailants and victims to explore the minds and motives of men and women who commit violence against their fellow workers.
Forensic psychiatrist and FBI consultant Dr. Park Dietz interviews Richard Farley, currently on death row for killing seven co-workers, and Wanda Rogers, who is serving a life sentence for attempted murder. At the end of the program, Dr. Dietz provides guidelines for the early detection and prevention of workplace violence. Contains offensive language. Viewer discretion is advised. An HBO Production. Soothing the Savage Beast: Venting Rage - Video/DVD
Is the physical release of anger in a controlled setting a healthy way to process it? Many angry people say yes—but not all researchers agree: "It’s a seductive theory. It does make sense, but it’s a myth," says noted psychologist Dr. Brad Bushman. In this program, ABC News anchors Charles Gibson and Connie Chung and correspondent John Stossel set the record straight about two different anger disorders and the methods used to control them. For under-venters, bataka bats and anger release workshops may be the prescription, but for over-venters, an anger management workshop is a better choice. (14 minutes, color)
