Arsenic and Old Lace: A Study in Turnaround Management - DVD

Arsenic and Old Lace: A Study in Turnaround ManagementSometimes transforming a failing enterprise takes the surgeon’s knife. Renowned business consultant Gerry Robinson prefers the axe. In this behind-the-scenes case study, Robinson applies his business acumen to The Vernon Road Bleaching and Dyeing Company, a British lace dyeing operation bought in bankruptcy by the father/son team of Henry and Richard Chaplin. Taking Richard to task for, among other things, disastrous inconsistency in decision-making and poor communication with employees, Robinson suggests re-motivating workers by building bridges of trust and respect—and, failing that, by the exit of the boss himself. Original BBCW broadcast title: Arsenic and Old Lace.

Clockwork

Management Leadership Supervisor Training DVDs.One hundred years ago American management faced many of the problems it confronts today—poor productivity, rapid technological change, and heightened competition. This program shows how mechanical engineer Frederick Taylor attempted to meet these challenges through “scientific management,” an early 20th-century program aimed at organizing and making ruthlessly efficient all aspects of industrial production. The film includes original footage which Taylor and his peers shot for the pioneering time-motion studies that paved the way for automated assembly lines. (25 minutes)

Cross Cultural Conference Room: An Interactive Video Seminar

Video - Purchase $550.00 (Item#PDDC-IRCCrossCulture)

The Cross-Cultural Conference Room program provides unique and timely insight into the global business world. The program demonstrates how teams of experienced managers from the United States, South America, and Japan, all working for the same multi-national company, attempt to solve a product failure dilemma.

At first, each work team tries to reach agreement on the best course of action. However, because of the great disparity in their decisions, two of the teams come together to reach a final recommendation. The non-scripted deliberations bring out striking ethical and cultural differences in decision-making, teamwork, and management styles. By viewing how the management teams discussed the same problem, and came to sharply different conclusions, you will observe cultural differences that are rarely recognized and seldom understood.

One of the beauties of this exceptional program is that it is designed to be used with or without an on-site trainer, with or without your participants coming together as a group, and with or without individualized (at-home) learning modules. This means you may mix or match any of the program's components to meet your needs.

The package includes one resource guide, business case study, videotape, DVD, and CD-ROM. The CD-ROM, which can be used by individuals as a self-directed learning and/or in a group setting, outlines fundamental concepts in intercultural relations and explains the dynamics of the management team's deliberations through exercises, text, animation, and video.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

Video $795.00/$225.00 (Item#PDDC-AKCUBAN)

The Cuban Missle Crisis training video. The Cuban Missile Crisis: A Case Study In Decision Making And Its Consequences

Change and growth inevitably force companies to make critical decisions at unexpected moments. Acting under pressure, many organizations make decisions that fall short, that operate in a frustrating cycle of trial and error, that can waste millions of dollars.

How should organizations reach decisions that successfully impact their enterprise? What elements are essential in surfacing the best decision a team can make?

Management experts consider the Cuban Missile Crisis one of the most successful decision making processes in history. In 13 pressure-packed days, President Kennedy’s Executive Committee debated and successfully resolved how to respond to the threat of attack by Soviet-controlled nuclear weapons installed in Cuba, a mere 90 miles from the Florida coast.

The Cuban Missile Crisis video is not a history lesson, but an examination of the leadership style and processes that led President Kennedy’s Executive Committee not just to a good decision, but to the optimal decision. If the five essential elements of leadership and work processes used during these meetings led to a decision that neutralized the threat of nuclear attack, think of what these elements can do for your organization’s decision making teams.

The Cuban Missile Crisis video features:

  • Robert McNamara
    Former Secretary of Defense
  • Theodore Sorensen
    Former Presidential Advisor
  • Ben Rasberry
    Senior Management Consultant
    Management Action Program, Inc.
  • Dr. Batia M. Wiesenfeld
    Stern School of Management
    New York University
  • Dr. Kathleen Kelley Reardon
    Professor of Management and Organization
    University of Southern California

Five essential elements of leadership and work processes:

  • Choosing the team members
  • Setting the tone for openness and trust
  • The role of the leader
  • Developing alternatives and considering their consequences
  • Moving the group from conflict to consensus

Jamie's Kitchen: Fifteen Lessons On Leadership - $1070.00 (Item #PDDC-TRNJKL)

"I’ve gone from being the boy next door to being the bloke with the weight of the world on his shoulders.” (Jamie Oliver from the Food Network on cable-TV)

Jamie Oliver’s passion and vision transformed a bunch of unemployed kids into an efficient, organised team, capable of running a first-class London restaurant, Fifteen.

Jamie is a natural and instinctive leader. And anyone who takes on a leadership role can learn a lot from watching him in action. Part of the new two-part Jamie’s kitchen training series, Fifteen lessons on leadership demonstrates that leadership is an activity and not a position. Leaders and potential leaders will identify with Jamie’s honesty and openness.

The program covers five key learning points backed up by real examples from Jamie’s journey:

    Lead the way
Jamie shows how a good leader makes sure everyone is clear about what is expected of them. He also has a clear vision of where he wants the project to go and can communicate this in a way everyone can understand.

    Show them how
Jamie is a highly visible leader who sets a great example to his team. He knows that when it comes to leadership, actions speak louder than words. He demonstrates how a good leader is prepared to tackle the unpleasant tasks as well as the pleasant ones.

    Believe in them
Jamie shows total belief in his team. His positive approach to coaching, always looking for things to praise, really pays off. Even when his team mess up, he gives them the message that they can and will get it right. He is not afraid to delegate.

    Deal with it
Jamie shows enormous responsibility throughout the project, personally, professionally and financially. He understands that if things go wrong, he – and no one else – will carry the can. His honesty in sharing how this affects him will strike a chord with all leaders.

    Learn and adapt
Jamie learns continually throughout the project. He learns about himself and about his team, discovering which techniques of leadership work best for each team member. If one way of tackling a problem doesn’t work, he tries another.

    The Benefit

  • Real life example of classic team development in action
  • Positive role model to inspire your audience
  • Will improve skills of both new and existing leaders

A Journey Into The Heroic Environment®

A Journey Into The Heroic Environment®8 Principles That Lead to Greater Productivity, Quality, Job Satisfaction, and Profits

Based on the internationally acclaimed book by Rob Lebow--Published by Prima Publishing

In the symbolic context of a dramatic story taking place on a cross-country train journey, this video introduces the concept of the Heroic Environment, accomplished through eight principles that can lead to greater productivity, quality, job satisfaction, and profits in an organization. John Spencer is a frustrated assistant plant manager returning home from a job interview by train, where he meets "Kip" Kiplinger, a successful self-made businessman with the wisdom of years and colorful stories to go with it. As the journey begins, Kip explains to John how job satisfaction is dependent upon work environment. Kip proceeds to introduce the concept of the Heroic Environment, where people are treated with respect, trust and dignity, contribute more, and rise to their potential. To accomplish this, he lists and explains eight principles, which cover values such as uncompromised truth and trust, as well as concepts like unselfish mentoring, openness to new ideas, risk taking, and putting the interests of others first. The principles are illustrated with lively stories and examples from Kip's wide experience in business and living. As a starting point for individual action, five characteristics of Heroic Behavior are finally given in simple, practical terms.

    Key Points:

  • Learn the 8 principles of the Heroic Environment that lead to greater productivity, quality, job satisfaction and profits in an organization.
  • Learn how Shared Values--trust, unselfish mentoring, risk taking, uncompromised truth, openness to new ideas and putting the interests of others first--lead to the standard for Heroic Relationships.

    Servant Leadership

    DVD $495.00 (Item#PDDC-TTCSERV)

    Servant Leadership DVD

With his initial definition of servant-leadership in 1970, Robert K. Greenleaf planted a seed of an idea which continues to grow in its influence on society with each passing year.

We are witnessing a shift in many businesses and non-profit organizations -- away from traditional autocratic and hierarchical modes of leadership and towards a model which is based upon teamwork and community; one which seeks to involve others in decision-making; one which is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior; and, one which is attempting to enhance the personal growth of workers, while at the same time improving the caring and quality of our many institutions. This emerging approach to leadership and service is sometimes called “servant-leadership”.

Part One presents a historical and conceptual overview of Servant-Leadership -- how it came to be developed and how it is currently defined.

Part Two presents an outline of ten characteristics. This program is designed to assist the viewer in identifying and understanding those Servant-Leadership characteristics which he or she might want to develop and practice further.

    Living on the Fault Line
As a microcosm of "Main Street America," this program focuses on the self-proclaimed City of the Future—San Diego, California—which has hitched its star to the promise of aggressive new information-age companies and rapid globalization. Companies that have moved manufacturing operations to Mexico are examined, along with the negative effects such moves have had on Mexican and American workers. In San Diego, we meet winners like the entrepreneurs who are creating their own tomorrow, as well as those Americans who are having trouble earning a secure tomorrow by loyalty and hard work. We see the high-tech elite as well as blue-collar factory workers and white-collar middle managers, forced into downward mobility or temp and part-time jobs. One special feature of this program is the personal stories of couples caught in the "time bind" of the New Economy—the competing poles of family, home, children, and two careers. A rare visit to schools in Shanghai, China, where thousands of young people are gearing up to compete in the global marketplace, underlines the urgency of our educational mission here in the States. Optimistic teachers, students, principals, and activists provide refreshing proof that all children are capable of learning and that displaced working people can reconnect to the economy by retooling their skills in the classroom. Beating the Bottom Line
Businesses on the verge of shutdown are rescued by creative partnerships enlisting management, labor, and communities in the common goal of providing for the long-term good of all. In this concluding episode of Surviving the Bottom Line, Smith finds companies that are generating new jobs and keeping work in America, while still achieving the New Economy’s competitive goals. Practical lessons in innovative power-sharing arrangements between labor and management are gleaned from powerful examples in the U.S., where companies like the Hathaway shirt factory and Northwest Airlines have recovered from the brink of collapse. Experience from countries such as Holland and Canada points to new ways America can support and protect its growing mass of temp workers and use workers’ pension funds to help both business and labor—with partnerships being the key to success. City of the Future—San Diego Economic Strategist, Neil Whitely-Ross - Part of the series: Managing Corporate Change

As in most of America, an economic earthquake shook southern California in the early 1990s. It was San Diego’s worst economic slump since the Great Depression. The aerospace industry, anchor of the local economy, was left in ruins. In the aftermath, business and civic leaders sought to reinvent San Diego—a microcosm of America. They envisaged a city of the future: a high-tech center for software development, biomedical research, and wireless communications that would drive San Diego’s economic growth into the next century. Neil Whitely-Ross, Vice President of the San Diego Economic Development Corporation, is a leading strategist and pitchman for the city. Whitely-Ross’s mission is to attract high-end jobs to San Diego by aggressively selling the advantages of cheap labor in Mexico to companies all across America, and to their global competitors. Their partnership, which created the country’s largest bank, was cheered by the financial world and made the new Chase a more potent global player. For Labrecque, a 33-year veteran of the legendary Chase, the merger was a strategic success. But at the same time, it meant major internal changes all through the ranks: the loss of 12,000 positions and a shifting of roles even at the top. Labrecque, who had served as Chase’s CEO since 1990, stepped down for Shipley. Today, Labrecque helps lead the new Chase as its president and chief operating officer. (30 minutes)

Management Combines Forces with Unions—Northwest Airlines - Part of the series: Managing Corporate Change

Management Leadership Supervisor Training DVDs.In 1993, as CEO of Northwest Airlines, John Dasburg headed a company on the verge of bankruptcy. Dasburg pulled back from the brink by striking a dramatic agreement with Northwest’s union. The union gave up 900 million dollars in wage and work rule concessions, and the owners gave labor three seats on the corporate board and 30 percent ownership of the company. The deal gave Northwest Airlines one of the United States’ biggest ESOPs—Employee Stock Ownership Plans. CEO Dasburg believes that Northwest’s new relationship with its union gives it a competitive advantage. In the 1980s, Northwest labor relations were so bad that some people nicknamed the company "Cobra Airlines"—they’d strike at anything. Today, Northwest has made a stunning economic comeback, one that Dasburg attributes largely to good labor/management relations. Dasburg likes labor’s presence on his board, and voluntarily extended their participation for another ten years. (30 minutes)

Cutting to the Core—Albert J. Dunlap - Part of the series: Managing Corporate Change

Management Leadership Supervisor Training DVDs.On Wall Street, no one has earned a bigger reputation for cutting companies down to size than corporate turn-around artist Albert J. Dunlap. As head of Scott Paper and, more recently, as CEO of Sunbeam, Dunlap carried out his time-tested formula as spelled out in his bluntly titled book Mean Business: boost the bottom line with swift, deep layoffs; sell off divisions; and move production to lower-wage states or abroad. Filmed at the height of Dunlap’s power, this program spotlights the practices that once served "Chainsaw Al" so well—and that have since fallen into such disfavor. (30 minutes)

Restoring Quality—Hathaway Shirts - Part of the series: Managing Corporate Change

Don Sappington, former CEO of Maine’s Bass Shoe Company, was handpicked to run the Hathaway Shirt Company after its Park Avenue owner, Linda Wachner, CEO of Warnaco, decided to close the plant. After workers protested the shutdown, former Maine Governor Jock McKernon put together a group of investors to buy Hathaway from Wachner, and then hired Sappington as CEO. Hathaway was a Maine tradition. The factory had operated in Waterville for 160 years. But with low-cost foreign imports hurting the domestic garment industry in the 1990s, Linda Wachner turned to cutting costs sharply, which also hurt shirt quality. When Wachner’s strategy failed, she decided to abandon the plant. But the people of Maine rallied to save this proud Maine institution, raising the investment money and the backing of federal, state, and local governments. Sappington decided to restore traditional Hathaway quality, convinced that appealing to the high end of the market would make Hathaway profitable again. (30 minutes)
